Cinnamon
Well over 5000 years the Arabs and Malaysian Muslims carried on a historical monopoly of Sri Lankan Spice Trade on a plethora of highly popular varieties of Spices. However, in the 15th century, the Portuguese invaded the Maritime Provinces and captured that Spice Trade, until the Dutch grabbed this lucrative business in (then Ceylon) Sri Lanka: they also indulged in cultivating especially the most sought after – Cinnamon. In the 18th Century the Britishers chased away the Dutch and the historical Colonization of the Island coincided with the Spice Trade, indulging also in the cultivation of Coffee and Tea that contributed to build the “Empire where the Sun Never Set” according to themselves.
Historically, Ceylon Cinnamon had been the most hunted down variety of Spice, particularly by the Western World. This trend has steadily and enthusiastically skyrocketed today, especially due to being absolutely free from harmful or dangerous side effects of consumption. Sri Lanka is said to be the only country that exports this wonderfully flavored and healthy variety of this Spice-Gem.
